I am the son of Johnnie Short who served in the late 40's to the mid 50's. Have many memories of dad's service, one especially I am trying to pin down for a book I am writing, the Christmas day fire downtown which took the bowling alley and much of a block on Lockerman? Does anyone remember the year and any more details? Dad responded in his pajamas with his new "McGregor windbreaker" gift from mom which he had just put on as the alarm sounded, came home that night after holding a line on the back of the building all day! The jacket was sooted and smokey, Dad wore it soot stains and all as a sign of love for Mom, even though it could never be restored.

Always nice to check in and see what's going on in Dover, a great place to have started my fire service career. I have been on Columbus Fire for 31 years now,and am the 2nd ranking officer in the division. I recently interviewed for the Vancouver, Washington Chief position but was concerned about the need to close two fire stations for budget reasons (and the fact that my 13 year old daughter flatly told me she wasn't going to move if I took the job!) The guys there reminded me a lot of Dover. It could have been a great fit, but a 2500 mile move for a department with financial concerns didn't seem to fit. I hope to visit Dover soon - it is good to see names still on the roster from my days there - Whitham, Alderson, Boyer, Guinta (Sal - do you ever get back to your native Newark, Ohio? Look me up) Best wishes to all. Stay safe. Karry L. Ellis Assistant Chief, Columbus, Ohio Division of FIre
